Healthy mushroom tea

 

 

I think it is time for another recipe. This time it is about chaga.


Chaga is a kind of mushroom that grows primarily on birches in countries in the north. This mushroom has been used for medical purposes in Russia and Asia for thousands of years.

The most common way of preparing chaga is to make tea.



I take a nice chunk of chaga and about one liter of water. I let it boil/simmer for about 1-3 hours. The fresh chaga chunks gives a black tea that looks like coffee. The chunks can be used up to six times or until they don’t give any colour to the water any more.


I sometimes make a huge batch of chaga and re-heat it in the next couple of days. It does not taste much itself, maybe a little bit of vanilla and an ever smaller bit of forest. If anything it is definitely not unpleasant. To make it more interesting to drink I like to spice it up with ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise and other spices. Occasionally I add oat milk or almond milk to it as well.

 

Chaga contains a lot of antioxidants and minerals and such. It is said to be a great booster of the immune system.

I like to drink it because I feel revitalized and not so tired. And the best part is that I get more vivid and interesting dreams! That is one reason that I think it makes it worth to give it a go.


It is also expensive, so I also get the feeling of luxury…

It is possible to harvest chaga in the Swedish forests as well, but you need to have permission from the owner of the land. It is not free for anyone to harvest as you like. I like to feel safe so I buy mine.


The tea can also be used as a base in a smoothie; and here I think the foresty undertones become more clear.

 

The mushroom grows wild, most common on birch trees. It has been called the king of mushrooms and other really catchy names that made me become interested in this organism.

It is also said to keep youth and to give you a longer life; and who does not want that.



I haven’t found any writings about negative side effects on chaga. And I feel really well.

 

The black chunks are chunks that have been used a couple of times. The brown/beige chunk is a brand new piece of chaga.

And the other stuff is of course cinnamon.
